DARYL Clare is hoping a first-team start is just around the corner after netting his first goal in a Mansfield shirt.

The striker scored the Stags' opener as they beat their Nottingham Forest counterparts 2-0 at Field Mill yesterday.

His fourth minute effort was his first since signing on loan from Rushden and Diamonds.

And with his fitness improving all the time under manager David Holdsworth, Clare is keen to get back into Blue Square Premier action.

"I am looking to forward to working with this club and the gaffer is already putting me through my paces," he said.

"He wants me as quick and fit as possible. It is hard work but I am enjoying it.

"My main objective against Forest was to get back on the goal trail, get some fitness and get some match sharpness.

"It is always nice to get back to scoring, no matter what level."

He said: "I would love to be involved on Saturday even on the bench, but let's not forget, the lads have been on a brilliant run."

Holdsworth was pleased with the performance of his second string, which saw Aaron O'Connor score the other goal.

"The team were excellent and I was delighted with the senior players, who led by example," he said.

"I was delighted with Daryl's 65 minutes and he put the ball into the back of the net as well."
