IN the wake of the recent announcement of a new console from Sony, I've spent this week kicking several shades out of some of their favourite sons and daughters.

Battle Royale brings together over 20 video game heroes that have helped establish the PlayStation brand over the last two decades.

Uncharted's swashbuckling Nathan Drake and Dante from Devil May Cry get to mix it up with the cute Sackboy and Sly Cooper.

Whether Sweet Tooth, the demented clown from Twisted Metal, or the skeletal lead from Medieval can legitimately call themselves "all-stars" is questionable and the absence of Lara Croft must be due to rights issues rather than star quality, but the roster of characters is certainly varied.

The brawling is entertainingly chaotic, too, though mastering the special moves introduces a degree of strategy.

Using your tactical nous to defeat the mighty Kratos from God of War playing as the diminutive Parappa the Rapper has a hugely satisfying David and Goliath feel to it.

Sadly, it's unlikely to happen. The fighters are poorly balanced and what should be interesting juxtapositions between different scrapping styles too often becomes a frustratingly skewed contest. In short, it's not Super Smash Brothers.

What this package undoubtedly does offer is value for money. Buy the PS3 game and you can download the PS Vita version for free and the fisticuffs transfer rather well to the small screen. If you own both consoles, add another star to the review score.

Now back to the PlayStation 4. Though details of what the machine will actually look like remain sketchy, we have been assured that the innards will be able to throw around Pixar-style visuals at ease and we can look forward to getting our sticky fingers on a touch-sensitive controller. It'll be interesting to see how many of these all-stars make the step up.
