W HAT happens when you get two powerhouses of Japanese game design to collaborate? An act of pure Revengeance.

Kojima Productions (esteemed makers of the Metal Gear Solid series) and Platinum Games (the cult behemoth responsible for Bayonetta) have joined forces to deliver a new spin on the world of Solid Snake and co.

Over-the-top fights and slicing blades: Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance

This isn't strictly how the story goes though – the collaboration brought about by problems with its development – Kojima Productions, struggling to make it work, gave Platinum Games free rein to redesign and replot. The result is an exuberant, joyous thing that thrusts you into a future full of cyborg ninjas and robotic dogs, slicing the world up with an electric blade, seeking "revengeance".

Set four years after Metal Gear Solid 4, Revengeance follows the tale of Raiden, a cyborg more machine than man, out to stop a corrupt private military corporation with very shady intentions.

As a ninja, Raiden's primary means of conversation is his sword, a deadly blade used to slice up cyborgs, robots and other large metal aggressors.

With Platinum at the helm, the action is as sublime as you'd expect, with Raiden's blade cutting swiftly with light/strong combos and a thrilling risk/reward parry system that does away with the need for any blocking or dodging in exchange for some gutsy timing. As you'd expect, Raiden's style is purely confrontational.

And when you think the blade can't slice any faster, you initiate Zandatsu, slow time, and gain full 1:1 control of the singing katana, allowing you to slice the enemy into as many random or tactical pieces as you desire.

As exhilarating as it is to take control of this fleet-footed ninja, Revengeance is not without flaws, its camera occasionally proving unwieldy. And, while its brevity may cause some to groan, it's the kind of game you relish playing again, enjoying those over-the-top boss fights and living it up as an incredibly badass cyborg ninja.
