FREEZING temperatures are set to continue across Notts until at least the end of the week.

Temperatures will climb no higher than 3°C during the day and could plummet to -4°C tomorrow evening, according to the Met Office.

There is also expected to be patchy freezing fog in some places and hard frosts at night for the rest of the week.

But Notts is prepared for the worst as the big freeze continues and schools are striving to stay open.

All but one of the county's schools were open yesterday. Only Fernwood Comprehensive School, in Wollaton, closed due to flooding.

In Newark, the London Road site of Orchard School was closed, with students directed instead to the Town site.

Nottingham City Transport has been praised for continuing its services in the snow.

Marketing manager Anthony Carver-Smith said: "Our drivers have been an absolute credit to us.

"They worked tirelessly and with real expertise in treacherous conditions – all with the ultimate aim of getting our passengers home safe and sound.

"All staff managed to get into work on Sunday morning, enabling buses to leave the garages at 6am as usual.

"They deserve a huge amount of praise for their driving skills and, along with our support staff, have shown a tremendous amount of dedication to our customers."

The operator's bad weather disruption web page was accessed 26,000 times between Saturday evening and Sunday night.

Nottingham County Council's gritting teams took to the roads from 6.30pm last night as temperatures fell again.

Andy Warrington, the council's service director for highways said: "The forecast for the weekend was accurate and our gritters were out night and day across the county.

"It is important to remember that, although a road will have been gritted, it may still have a covering of snow. It will depend on the amount of traffic that has started to mix the salt with the snow to turn it to slush."

“Maybe the gutter slugs (Labour's Parking Enforcement Squad) should be made to clear the pavements of snow instead spreading their left-wing hatred and intolerance of the working community?”

“DON'T FORGET CEOs REMOVE SNOW FROM YELLOW LINES TO GIVE FINES IN SPITE OF THE FACT THEY ARE INSTRUCTED NOT DO THIS.

THEY WILL THEN LIE AND BE FULLY BACKED BY PARKING & PERMITS AND THOSE AT LOXLEY HOUSE WHATEVER THE EVIDENCE.”
