THIS week's snowfall has evoked fond (and not so fond) memories of big freezes of the past in Nottinghamshire.

One of the most memorable winters was 1947 – which people still describe as one of the worst in living memory.

Notts County Council's Library and Archive Service and the Picture the Past website, which includes almost 100,000 images from yesteryear, have been looking back at some of our fiercest winters.

Chris Weir, principal archivist at Notts County Council, says: "There are some fascinating records and images which exist related to severe winters of the past. Snowdrifts and striking images of frozen rivers such as the Trent are of great interest."
