THE humiliation of being bowled out for just 59 sparked Notts' amazing fightback on day two of their County Championship match, insisted Paul Franks.

The all-rounder led the way at the top of the order in the hosts' second innings total of 357-6.

That was in sharp contrast to day one when the hosts were blown away for 59 – the lowest Division One score of the season.

With Yorkshire having made 264 in their first innings, thanks largely to Andrew Gale's career-best 151 not out, Mick Newell's men now have a lead of 152 going into day three.

It sets up an intriguing finish, which is crucial to both side's hopes of claiming the four-day title come the end of next week.

"The first day was desperately disappointing. When I went home I was as disappointed as I have ever been in all my time at Notts," said Franks.

"It made me determined when I came back yesterday morning to do something about it.

"We can't forget that 59 in a game like this was just not good enough. I was embarrassed and I'm sure a lot of the other players were as well.

"But we went out and showed some character in the second innings. The lads knew they had let themselves down.

"Having played so well all season we did not just want to throw it away without a fight.

"I'm gutted not to go on to get a century – you always are if you work hard to get into a position where you can go to three figures.

"But it was nice to contribute those runs at an important time, especially as I haven't been as consistent recently as I was with the bat at the start of the season."

Just how much hope Notts have of recording an unlikely victory depends on how many runs they can eke out from their last four wickets.

Franks added: "We still have our skipper (Chris Read) there and hopefully the tail can wag as well.

"If we can get in a position where we have a few more runs on the board, as many as we can, then we will have an opportunity.

"Wickets have gone in clusters and if we can get two or three early ones when we bowl again and create some pressure, then it is not going to be an easy total for Yorkshire to get."
