Who owns the business?
It is still owned by the Dalton family over four generations.
How long have you been going?
What does your business do?
Woodworking machinery manufacturers, distributors and engineers.
How many people do you employ?
Who are your customers?
Basically anyone who works with wood, ie joinery and furniture manufacturers, timber merchants, building contractors, boat builders, shop fitters and public authorities including the health sector, prison service, ministry departments, colleges and schools.
How have you been doing over the last three years?
They have been difficult due to a marked drop in demand as a result of a downturn in the economy. During this period public authority work has helped to keep us busy and indications are that the commercial sector is beginning to come to life again.
What sort of recession did you have?
We had been distributors for Wadkin at Leicester for over 50 years and there was a natural progression in that having acquired the name we should continue the supply and manufacture of a number of their well established machine designs.
What are your plans for the future?
We expect the business to continue it its present form under the stewardship of Alex Dalton who is interested in diversifying further into CNC and other hi-tech equipment in order to widen our customer base to include companies not only working in wood but also where appropriate plastics, composites, aluminium, etc.
What is the biggest threat to your company?
Anything which would threaten the continuity of ownership/management together with further downturns in the economy should they occur.
And your biggest opportunity?
Developing the Wadkin brand which is still famous throughout the world together with our other high profile distributorships and continuing to widen our customer base.
