TODAY could be D-day in Nottingham Forest's efforts to land Cardiff City winger Peter Whittingham.

Sources close to the player in Wales suggest that Whittingham will decide on his future within the next 24 hours.

Cardiff themselves remain keen to sell the winger, rather than run the risk of losing him for nothing when his contract expires next summer, as happened with Joe Ledley.

But it is believed Whittingham, who scored 25 goals last season, is now considering whether to remain with Cardiff for now, despite the interest from Forest and several other Championship sides.

The 25-year-old still does not plan to sign a new deal with Dave Jones' side, but could decide to wait until January and see if Cardiff's anticipated promotion push materialises.

However, despite the pending sale of Ross McCormack to Leeds, the Welsh club's cash problems have not completely disappeared and they would rather recoup some cash for the player now.

The sale of 24-year-old McCormack will help raise the £1m-plus Cardiff require to pay the portion of the wages of on-loan Manchester City man Craig Bellamy.

Despite Cardiff's big spending to bring in Bellamy and the likes of Jason Koumas (Wigan), Daniel Drinkwater (Man Utd) and Seyi Olofinjana (Hull) on loan, their financial crisis continues.

Forest have been fined £12,500 by the FA following the fracas during the 1-1 draw against Leeds United at the City Ground. Leeds were fined £7,500.

    “Dear Mr Doughty,
I understand your reluctance in these difficult times to spend your hard earned on over priced players that may not be up to the required standards so I suggest an alternative, why not divert the price of a good forward (in the Championship) towards the appointment of a successful, gifted player and proven manager capable of great things? The only member of the playing staff we have any hope of signing this season happens to be the only logical option if we have any reasonable expectation of sustained success with the club.
Billy Davies has done what he does to get us where we are but we need someone more capable to get where we know our club can be. Forget the European Cups, we were a very difficult to beat consistent top 6 finishing top flight club who nobody enjoyed playing except maybe Liverpool. We were always good for the semis at least in the domestic cups, today we would have to be as good as Spurs and given some of their players I think this is entirely possible, but, only with someone of the calibre of Martin O'Neill at the helm”

“Does this mean that when Billy goes we can get Martin in instead and get back on with the program?”

“So D Day passes, D Day + 1 is almost up too and still no news. Thank goodness for the transfer deadline otherwise this frustration would go on all season!”

“Not sure if this has been mentioned on here today as i'm not reading these comments. I'm not particularly suicidal at the moment and would like to keep it that way. Anyway, Victor Chandler today started punting odds on which championship manager will go first. They've got Billy down as 3/1f as the first to get the sack (Strachan second favourite).

I just wanted to make the point that we have "wonderful" sponsors who really get behind our club.

    Victor Chandler is scum.”

“Blimey have we only 6 away games under BD!? That's a scary stat. I found it strange an interview BD gave about prep for pre-season when asked do you do anything different, his reply no we do the same every year because it's not that important, it's the business end that counts, well we failed at the business end last year Billy, could have been a good time to change and also do something different on our travels because it's not working!”

    “First the good news:

Charlton 0, Forest 2 (Charlton relegated)
Reading 0, Forest 1 (Reading go on long run without winning at home)
Plymouth 0 Forest 1 (Plymouth relegated)
Posh 1 Forest 2 (Posh relegated)
Swansea 0, Forest 1 (Swansea couldn't score to save their lives)
WBA 1, Forest 3 (A genuine top class display)

    Now the bad...

In the other 33 away games Forest have played under tactical genius Billy Davies we have won NIL and only scored more than once when the reserves - ie not really his team - drew 2-2 at Scunny.

This is why Saturday against Norwich is so important. Forest desperately need to win to kick off this season and show they are still strong at home as away we are terrible.
As folk are beginning to say on here the real concern is the defence - we are currently very wobbly.
Win against Norwich and we're looking at climbing the table, anything less and we will be in the bottom three, possibly even bottom itself.
Two seasons ago Forest got thrashed 5-1 in the match before the first international break and it set the tone for the whole season.
There is so much complacency in the air, it could happen again!
Everyone presumes we are going to go on a good run, but it will only happen by sheer hard work - and the fitness levels in first four games have not been as good as last season. Can you see Billy Davies staying if the tide turns against us. No chance, he's interested in his own CV, not Nottingham Forest”

“the club are just ticking along until it is the right time to invest. unfortunately for us, that will not be until they announce the world cup venue. then we will start to see investment.

such investment (as is being called for now by some fans, i.e in the pitch sports diner and the facilities to serve half time refreshments) would be fruitless if the wc comes to england and nottingham is chosen as a host venue as that will mean a new ground for us, therefore any money spent now is pure deadloss. i understand the concern being showed, but i doubt any business would invest any money (other than what is essential) into premises they are set to leave (i accept that we'll be at the cg for at least 6 more seasons) but the powers that be appear to have decided that they'll only invest if the ultimate return outweights the initial investment by at least double (otherwise the financial reward isn't worth the risk of the investment).

i can't explain why players still haven't been signed, but then neither can anyone, so i'm not alone there. however, i'm one of the 'stupid idiots' that believes we will sign players, whether on loan or permanant. i believe this because the club surely have more targets than have been mentioned and forest do usually do their business in private. the pratley, whittingham, and johnson saga being the exception which proves the rule, so to speak.”
