Forest boss Davies blasts players for failing to take chances

BILLY Davies launched a scathing attack on his Nottingham Forest players for their inability to convert chances as they bowed out of the Carling Cup at the hands of League Two Bradford City.

And the Reds manager questioned whether the money in modern football is having a negative influence on his players.

Forest lost 2-1 in extra-time at Valley Parade last night but could have comfortably killed the game off long before.

Matt Thornhill put the Reds ahead in the first half but Nathan Tyson, Dexter Blackstock, Thornhill and Dele Adebola all failed to convert good opportunities.

A furious Davies said: "It was the same old story. You cannot have the chances we have in front of goal and not hit the target.

"We train every single day, we work on finishing and crossing.

"We have to say that, while we have players out of position and a young side, the bottom line is that, with the amount of chances we had and the amount of times we should have scored goals and did not manage to, is inexplicable.

"We train every single day on these things. We will not train any more because we do enough already."

And Davies questioned whether the high wages of some of his players – and in football in general – was a negative influence.

"I am disappointed, because the quality at times from very good players was disappointing," he said.

"People pay very good money to be entertained and maybe the fact of the matter is that we have given young players too much, too early.

"With the kind of pay that they get, with the cars they drive and the houses they live in, they need to realise that they are being paid good money to provide quality; quality of finishing and quality of crossing.

"Unfortunately, what is happening in the game, with the money involved, it is not conducive to players working hard enough.

"I think there is complacency in the game, throughout all the levels. At our club and everywhere else, there are players who have had too much, too early."

“You are so right Billy that young players get far too much too early in life. However, is it wise to criticise players so openly in public? It cannot do team spirit any good I would have thought.”

“When are you idiots going to realise Billy Davies has nothing to do with TRANSFERS! in and out of the club, how many times does he have to tell you? Get it into your thick skulls! You've got the best manager around for god sake so either support the club or pi$$ off! Is that fair enough?”

    “Non League, errrrrrr, Nigel

I think we should be more worried about what's coming out of our own manager's mouth instead of Direby's.”
