FOREMARK Reservoir Opens for trout fishing at 7.30am on March 1, with boats available from 8.30am. A six-fish permit, plus catch & release costs £25.

Draycote Water opens on March 8. It is £16 for a one-fish permit, plus catch & release.

Over at Toft Newton, 100 rods caught 813 fish (8.1 ave). Despite the big freeze, the majority of anglers opted for floating lines, long leaders with a weighted lure on the point and a black buzzer or diawl bach on the dropper.

Lots of big fish have come out, including a personal best for Ian Foulstone from Skegness, weighing 12lb 8oz and taken on a gold head damsel.

Fishery boss Jason Foster 'borrowed' Martin Rowson's rod while he warmed his hands and caught a 7lb fish third cast on a black buzzer. Craig Atkin caught a nicely-conditioned rainbow a touch under 5lb.

By contrast, it has been a poor start to the year at a frozen Thornton. Only 32 rods ventured out, taking 44 trout for an average of 1.4.

Lifejackets are now required while on the pontoon and in a boat. Contact 01530 230807.
