How Do I Become A Fitness Instructor?
(Advertising feature)
If you’re the kind of person who gets a buzz from exercise, likes to be in top shape and always has your nose buried in a fitness magazine, then a career as a fitness instructor could be for you.
It goes without saying that you do need to be in pretty good shape to consider this kind of career, as you will probably have a fairly intense schedule of classes to teach, particularly if you start off working in a gym. However, that doesn’t necessarily mean you have to have an amazingly sculpted body and be a size 8 or have the perfect six pack. Just like the rest of us, fitness instructors come in all shapes and sizes, and as long as you are healthy, take good care of yourself and have a good attitude to food and health, pretty much any size goes.
There are lots of places where you can train to become a fitness instructor, but the most important thing to consider when you are deciding which course to take is the accreditation. Make sure that the course is accredited by the Register of Exercise Professionals (REP) which is a national register of fitness instructors and personal trainers in the UK. Once you have completed your training you will then be eligible to join this register. In essence what it means is that you have completed a proper training programme with a recognised trainer who is actually qualified to teach you, and that your qualification is worth the paper it’s written on. When you are looking for jobs this will be one of the first things a potential employer will look for on your CV, and you will find it difficult to get work without it.

There are three levels of qualification for a fitness instructor – Level 1, Level 2 and then Level 3 which is usually a Personal Trainer qualification. If you think you might like to work abroad as a fitness instructor then it’s best to look for courses that are awarded by the Central YMCA or (CYQ) as this is an internationally recognised qualification and means you would legally be allowed to work in America, Australia or anywhere where the course is recognised. You might not be thinking about it now, but it’s always best to plan ahead when it comes to your career, and it will save you having to retrain later if you do decided to head overseas.
