Firm fined £10,000 after man suffered burns at Beeston site
A COMPANY has been fined £10,000 after a man received 60 per cent burns following an explosion at the Beeston factory where he worked.
The 33-year-old welder from llkeston, who did not want to be named, was working for Fluorocarbon Bakeware Systems Ltd, which manufactures industrial bakeware, on December 16, 2008, at its unit in Beeston.
Nottingham Magistrates' Court heard the worker was cutting metal when a spark ignited fumes from a can of thinner nearby. It exploded and the man was covered in hot liquid. The Health and Safety Executive investigation found there was no provision for the storage of thinners and no risk assessment had been carried out.
Fluorocarbon Bakeware Systems of Caxton Hill, Hertford, pleaded guilty to contravening regulations 5(1) and 6(1) of the Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations 2002. It was ordered to pay costs of £5,227.
