A DRIVER had to be cut free from his vehicle after a collision with an ambulance.

An eyewitness said the man was in a Volkswagon Golf turning on to Heanor Road, in Ilkeston, off Shipley Common Lane.

He said he believed the ambulance was answering a 999 call when the incident took place around 1pm yesterday as its lights were flashing.

Fire crews from Ilkeston and Heanor used heavy cutting equipment to free the driver who was treated by paramedics before being taken to hospital.

Post reader Simon Bell, 30, from Ilkeston, who took this picture of the crash, said: "There were two people in the ambulance who were fine."

A Derbyshire Police spokeswoman confirmed police were investigating the collision.
