THE number of sickness days taken by Notts police officers has fallen by 22% in the past five years, according to new figures.

They were off ill 21,924 days between April 1, 2007, and March 31, 2008, down from 28,086 between April 1, 2003, and March 31, 2004.

Force bosses say the fall, revealed to the Post under the Freedom of Information Act, is the result of a number of force initiatives.

But Notts Police Federation said £1,000 payments offered to officers who took fewer than nine days sick leave a year had made some ill people go in to work.

Hilary Pierce, Notts police's occupational health advisor, said: "Anyone who has more than three sickness absences in a year gets priority help. We have regular meetings with human resources teams and pick up on individual cases.

"We also have a pot of Home Office money to fast track people for MRI scans, consultant appointments and surgery if necessary."

Mick Taylor, chairman of Notts Police Federation, said: "There has been cases where genuine sick officers have come in for fear of losing money.

"Other ideas to reduce sick leave have been a success. The decision to put a sergeant in the control room has helped manage the response to incidents and has reduced fatigue levels suffered by frontline officers."

Sickness levels fell by eight per cent between 2006/7 and 2007/8.

“I totally agree with the comments made by Rob and RH. Its so easy for people to pass judgement on the Police and slate them to the ground but answer me one question if your not on fire or ill who do you call? Here is a clue its not the ghost busters! I can understand that some people do hate the Police and the main reason for that is because you are doing something to warrant the attention of the Police. Far to much of the publics perseption of what the Police do is based upon the TV programmes like road wars etc well would you watch the programme if they showed the real life of a Police officer making the arrest and then spending 5-6 hrs in front of a computer and then months of enquires leading upto the court date! A great reality check made by RH below so please look into the other ways the goverment is wasting money because I can tell you that for your £100 plus you are getting a great deal for your money the work the Police do is priceless I dont think you can put a price on the fantastic job Police Officers do and the effort and pride they put into thier work!”

    “rob well said
sadly people havent the first idea and make judgement s -wonder how happy the moaners would be , being the officer dealing with a cot death , and stopping on to ensure all paperwork is completed to ensure that family can greive more easily, he may miss putting his own child to bed but knows his file is needed to move the case forward so that baby can be buried - or the officer that comes back from a family holiday to attend court as he/she wants to make sure that offender gets justice= or the one who has to tell a mother her sons been killed- need i go on ..............frankly to not be ill with the stress of it all is a wonder ........let alone from the shifts, coming into contact with the vilest people and handling people with desease and infections most people have no idea about....mmm bet most of these jobs NO ONE would want to do , so i think you deserve every penny -cause i wouldnt do it for all the tea in china”

“Some, no all, of the above comments are ill informed and show no undertstanding of the role of the police. Training doesnt take a few weeks Steve, it takes months of initial training followed by 10 weeks under tutorship, followed by 2 years probationer training. Training is then on going throughout the officers career and is often up to them to keep up to date with constantly changing legislation. There arnt many jobs that undertake the possibility of serious harm and injury or worse, while protecting strangers many of whom would rather spit at you than say hello. The role of a police constable is such that they deal with life changing situations for them selves and others. To be honest I find your comments offensive and ignorant Steve, so do some educated research. An officer might be contracted to do certain hours but certainly works over the required hours by a large amount each week, without fail, many of which is unpaid. These are done for the notion of duty, and pride in the work being carried out. Duty and pride, think about that. The extra money is a recognition of the danger involved in the job and the huge amount of hours owed to officers who work over the hours, work entire shifts without a break (yes cops need to eat!!) and often go to work on rest days to attend appointments and catch up on admin. I know, I do it far too often. If you want to look at the real waste of public funds look in depth at local councils.”

“This is a total disgrace £1000 of taxpayers money to work contracted hours, despite what they would have you believe police work in no more stressful than many other jobs. They have been milking this old chestnut for years. They get better pay than most for a job that takes a few weeks training as apposed to the likes of a nurse or schoolteacher that takes a couple of years. If they take too many days off get rid of them they will soon the trough has eventually run dry.”

“One simple solution is to save the bonuses and employ more Police officers, they can then deploy them onto beat walking duties, they will be fitter, save money, and less time off work.

    Problem solved.”

“Mr Taylor's comment of coming to work for fear of losing money needs looking at,what he is really saying that they come because they are afraid of losing the bonus on offer. What a sad state of affairs, the more I read the more I thank God I live downunder............”

“I'm sure people struggling to pay their rising council tax will welcome these cash handouts. We don't get had-outs at my firm. If you don't come to work you just dont get paid. Simple as. What's this country coming to?”
