MANCHESTER United manager Sir Alex Ferguson led the tributes to Jimmy Sirrel when he was honoured at a special dinner at Meadow Lane on January 22 this year.

Ferguson met Sirrel during a coaching course at Lilleshall in 1972.

In a specially-filmed video message, he said: "It's a night I really regret I'm missing because it's for a special man.

"I am delighted they are honouring you Jimmy. Thank you for the friendship over the years.

"I will always remember you were the first coach that gave me advice when I became a coach myself.

"Back in Lilleshall you gave me a piece of advice I have never forgotten.

"It's always been a part of my discipline of management."

During the event, Jimmy Sirrel spoke of the enduring love affair with Notts supporters that lasted throughout his life. A specially-commissioned portrait of the legendary manager was also unveiled that night, to the delight of all associated with the club.

He said: "I have had a tremendous life in Nottingham because people have loved me.

"The only thing I knew was football when I was a young kid and that is all I've ever needed. I've lived through football.

"I was playing for Bradford Park Avenue and I started coaching, I think just to get me out of the house at night!

"I was taught to be honest about everything, for good or bad, and I was.

"The players during my time were an honest and tremendous bunch, and they worked hard.

"It is interesting to see people who have got feelings for Notts County, and hopefully the club will be successful and reach the same stage where fans fill the ground like it was in my day."
