Families to get Wiis to beat obesity
FAMILIES with overweight children will be given Nintendo Wiis in a bid to combat childhood obesity.
A project by Nottingham Trent University scientists shows that playing Nintendo Wii sports games may help children to reach the recommended levels of physical activity. The research has been funded by the Department of Health.

Nottingham Trent University are researching the links between the game and confidence
Dr Chris Bussell, academic team leader for Sport Science at the university, said: "The hope is that the children will be seen to make improvements in their self-confidence, which will in turn increase the likelihood that they will take part in other healthy physical activity outside of the home."
Sports Science research students are studying the health benefits of the Nintendo Wii Fit, before examining the effects of introducing the consoles to families.
New guidelines from the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (Nice) recommend that initiatives promoting physical activity should involve the whole family.
The team will be working with families from Nottingham's Go4it group – an NHS initiative working to educate children on how to control their weight.

“Ah, John, John, John, quick as ever to put other peoples point of view down *rolls eyes*
Do you have a wii fit ? have you used one ? they are a gimmick, something thats 'good' for a laugh, something more geared towards sharing the experience with friends and family, not a tool to help educate people about exercise !. Its flawed anyway as it uses BMI to determine whether you are overweight which is the most rediculous method available, as peoples muscle density varies from person to person and telling someone that they are overweight or obese, whether thay know it or not is not the best approach and can lead to drastic measures and further pshing these kids into a shell. A sustainable approach of nutritional education and physical activity is the best way forward and engaging these young people with local youth projects or even investing the money in creating somewhere that these overweight kids can all go and not feel out of place would be much better.
Ultimately though its the parents that need the education as its them who are buying the food, preparing the meals and not encouraging their children to get outdoors and play with other children.”

“Once again, the average intelligence of the Nottingham Evening Post reader shines through these comments!!
If you read the story, this is about engaging with the kids that won't go out and play and who are already resigned to sitting indoors and playing computer games. By swapping their usual games with more active ones, then they've gained a step in the right direction , will derive some health benefits and in turn might hopefully build their confidence in order to begin taking up the more traditional forms of exercise that so many of you have mentioned!”

“Buy over weight children a skipping rope, that will burn the calories off. Sitting around with a nintendo wii will only add to their weight, they need exercise.”

“Only a hair brained professor could come up with something as rediculous as this. Why not spend money on educating both parents and children on calories and that more calories in with less calories out (burned) will mean weight gain. Plus, we are all going to have to pay out again when all these reformed antisocial fatties come asking for glasses allowances due to over watching the TV *rolss eyes* Uni staff, save yourselves some money and stop this 'experiment' in favour of good old communication. Its worth keeping your eye on Ebay though for bargains on second hand, hardly used wii's !!”

“I quite agree with the majority of comments on here. When we were at school, we suffered four hours a week physical excercise and four hours a week sports and games.
We also walked to school and back, were forced out onto the playgrounds at break times and made to eat healthy, nourishing foods, either at home or at school. We were never dropped off in a four x four that double parked outside the school gates, by a mother that could neither see over the steering wheel or incompetently drive the stupid thing.
The thought of rewarding obese children with electronic games consoles which cost a fortune in additional games is a national disgrace.
Is this all our PHD`s can dream of at tax payers expense? Why doesn`t he commit himself to REAL medical research?”

“well kids have to be supervised to go out and play these days as there are too many perverts about. But i think the parents need to help the children understand how to try and eat and excercise a little more healthy .i dont think a wii fit will helo as they will probabaly want a chocolate bar after”
