VISITORS to a new exhibition can find out more about issues facing asylum seekers.

The Words exhibition has been put together by young people in Notts, the county council's library service and the Red Cross.

It will be showcased at a number of venues across the county until June 2012.

As part of the project young people met with asylum seekers to hear their stories.

Jon Bevan, a co-ordinator in the county's youth arts team, said: "This project had given young people a great insight into asylum difficulties.

"Many of the images were drawn after long chats and heart-to-hearts with people involved in the asylum journey."

Groups involved included the County Youth Arts Visualise group, The Core Southwell, Redhill Young People's Centre, the County Youth Arts Bassetlaw Youth Theatre and Zone Out Young People's Centre.

The exhibition will be at:

Arnold Library, Front Street, from November 14 to December 12

Mansfield Central Library, Regent Street, from January 3 to February 14

Southwell Library, King Street, from February 29 to March 19

The Old Library, Leeming Street, Mansfield, from April 30 to June 29.

That's not true. Somone who is granted refugee status will initially be given 5 years leave to remain. Then they have to apply for indefinite leave to remain. If they succeed after 12 months they may choose to apply for citizenship.

It is clear to me that many of those passing judgement here don't actually understand how the system works at all.”

“The problem is the Dublin Treaty, which they dont tell you about .This states anyone given asylum must be given full citizen-ship rights straight-away......so asylum becomes a way to jump the legal immigration queue.”

“So which party do you support Neilant?
No doubt one from somewhere far out to the left. Which is obviously why you bully and berate people with moderate mainstream veiws - from your perspective they seem to be far out to the right.
As I've said before politics is a circle. Start from the top and go left or right and you will eventually meet at the bottom (Stalin = Hitler). So if you want to find fascist bullies and bigots, neilant & smith1980, look closer to home.”

Oh, & try another label or pigeon-hole for me, the one you just used is incorrect.. Im sure you,ve got a good selection to choose from..”

“globy001.... I totally agree with all your comments, a lot of which are facts....

The government/authorities deal with the ongoing situation as efficiently as they possibly can (as do all governments), & obviously dont ever grant asylum to anyone unless they decide they are a genuine asylum seeker....

So what is the actual complaint by certain other posters.... & whatever the complaint is, what is their solution?..”

“we can not afford to keep taking in large groups of asylum seekers or economic migrants, education system, housing, health service and employment are buckling under the pressure.
towns and cities up and down britain are feeling tension about the situation, and if the government dont get a grip, there's going to be one huge blood bath.”

    “@John_Carlton
"However to say that the vast majority who comes here and ask for asylum are genuine and should automatically be allowed in is just plain ridiculous. There is undoubtedly wide-scale abuse and over liberal treatment of claimants."

I disagree. Any government is under immense pressure from the public to keep down the numbers of asylum seekers allowed into the country. This political pressure has created the kind of environment detailed by Borders Agency whistleblower Louise Perrett: http://tinyurl.com/yg2m2dp Officials who granted asylum applications were treated as having failed, a culture that came from the topmost levels of seniour management.

Anyone who has ever known an asylum seeker will know how difficult it is to prove to the UKBA that you are a victim of persecution due to the almost impossible hoops that you have to jump through. It is particularly difficult if you were forced to flee without any documentation. This results in people being refused because they cannot prove their case NOT simply because they are lying.

Yes I have heard of immigration detention centres. I know that they are used by the government to hold people indefinitely because they can't deport them (something they are frequently criticised for internationally). I know they are used to hold asylum seekers whose claim is still being determined. I know that they are places of extreme desparation where people frequently attempt suicide rather than being sent home.

I also know that attitudes like yours are making all of these things more likely.”
