ELDERLY residents at a sheltered housing complex are being targeted by a serial burglar.

The intruder is believed to have struck at least six times in the last four months, leaving his victims at The Firs complex, in Sherwood, feeling vulnerable and traumatised.

Some of the offences have happened while the residents were in their homes. When spotted, the man has waved at them.

Audrey Steer, 87, had money stolen. She said: "It's very unpleasant and it gives you a nasty feeling that every time you leave your room you are vulnerable.

"It's quite outrageous that people can come into the building and take your money."

In some cases, the man has unscrewed windows, but in others he has walked in through unlocked doors.

The housing scheme is owned by the Abbeyfield Society, a charitable organisation, which says it cannot afford to pay for upgrades to its security systems.

Scheme manager Neil Kenyon said: "We are unable to bring in new security measures as we are a not-for-profit organisation and would have to raise fees for our members in order to fund them.

"We are hoping police can install CCTV on the site."

A man was arrested in connection with the burglaries in May but later released without charge.

Police say they are carrying out regular patrols in the area.

    “Well where to begin...

"I have actually seen the dumps and lives that these scrotes have chosen to creat themselves."

How they choose to live is exactly that, their choice. Not to everyone's taste admittedly.

"I have also seen the inside of a prison so I am suitably qualified to comment I think."

Obviously not, as you seem happy to *lie*

I've seen inside numerous prisons on numerous occasions in a professional capacity, I work in and around the prison system. So i think I'm 'suitably qualified.'

"their lives in prisons, are definately palaces in comparison"

So? They've got low standards, civilised society hasn't. Or i suppose you think we should bring back the slums and undo all of Aneurin Bevan's good work?!

"And yes they do have Xbox and TVs in Nottm prison for sure"

Again, no they don't, at one stage they might have *paid* from the meagre wage they *earn* to have an old Playstation One, but not any more. As for TV see the comments i made earlier.

"They are snakes who will never "have served their debts to society" by short gaol sentences in my mind."

On this we vaguely agree, though your terminology is rather crude. Short sentences do no one favours. Not prisoners and vertainly not society. A vast majority of crime is to feed drugs habits, a vast majority of this crime i carried out by a tiny minority of criminals.

If we had a system in which people were treated for drug addiction, educated and encouraged to get jobs this would solve part of the problem. Leaving plenty of room in prison for the very small number of violent and dangerous people who deserve to spend a long time behind bars, if not their entire lives.

At present our prison system fails prisoners and *society* but harsh punitive measures degrade us as a society and do nothing to address the root cause of most (note i say MOST, not all) crime.

"No, sorry, you gave up your human rights when you choose to act like an animal and attack your fellow man."

You didn't give up your human rights, but you gave up your liberty, which (unless you choose to believe the lies and nonsense by people like Rick) is exactly the case.

The problem is that Michael Howard's Prison Works mantra was false, and perpetuated by the totalitarian New Labour government, whether the coalition is brave enough to take on a very difficult job is yet to be seen.

"There are mountains of help out there if you ask; it's about *choice*"

You're right, and people make the wrong choices, and then they get punished for them.

But this discussion was centred around whether the what Rick was saying was a pack of lies (it was), not whether these people deserve to be in jail (they do).

    @Mildew

Whether society fails its old and vulnerable, it could do a lot better, is not the issue here. It is about people spreading lies and agit-prop.

All that is the case here is that I was in a position to correct some (deliberate?) misconceptions and chose to do so.”

“Either you're being deliberately obtuse, or you are just stupid.

I'm off, big meeting today, bear that in mind, a few hours in which you can think of something worthwhile to say perhaps?”

“Nick Griffin's Glass Eye, Swivelling. Exactly, care!
You clearly have no idea or regard for the plight of the many elderly who live and die alone miserably every year, many who have experienced being poor and yet still having the indignity of being robbed. For some it is the final straw and their last major memory of this appalling society that values the perpetrator over the victim.
You clearly also fail to understand the reason prisons exist, they are not their to provide inmates with a level of comfort and extensive freedom. They are places of incarceration to enable the perpatrator to reflect on their crime and pay by means of a loss of freedom.
Unfortunately successive governments have lost this thread also and added to the list of perks prisoners get. One can commit murder and be released within 10 years with a degree and sue the prison authorities for each misdemeanour they have suffered.
No l don't want the system they have in Saudi or Burma unless of course it works better than our system, then yes l'd vote for that.
Your post sums up my concerns fully. Not only do prisoners fair better than many elderly, some are also so arrogant to realise why they are imprisoned, expecting better treatment than their victims.”
