The air rifle pellet hit the bird under its left leg, causing extensive blood loss. It was later put down by a vet.
Dodd pleaded guilty to shooting the dove with his air rifle, which is a criminal offence under the Wildlife and Countryside Act.
He appeared at Nottingham Magistrates Court and was given a 12-month conditional discharge and fined £938.35
He was also ordered to sign over his air rifle to the RSPCA.
In his defence, Dodd claimed that the dove had been causing a mess in his garden.
Insp Mike Scargill said: "Countless wild birds, and other animals, are targeted with air weapons every year and I hope this sentence will prove a deterrent."

“Good on him I would shoot them all they are not native to this country and have populated every corner of the UK with their incessant excessively repetitive loud cooing cooing noises I have had the displeasure of living near a park and being disturbed and driven mad by their un-natural mating calls at unearthly hours the man who introduced them in 1956 has a lot to answer for I have even heard them on period dramas obviously set pre 1956 such an intrusion. Would welcome comments from any sympathisers”
