DRINK-DRIVERS in Notts are still not getting the message.

So far this month, at least 75 have been arrested on suspicion of the offence.

Police officers have arrested at least 75 drink drivers this month

And police say too many people are still taking chances behind the wheel.

Chief Inspector Andy Charlton, who is running the annual anti drink-driving campaign, said: "The campaign is having the desired consequences in terms of arrests.

"The downside is that we are catching so many drink-drivers. It is sad that people are not listening to the message."

Mr Charlton said the figures were at a similar level to last year, when 152 people were caught drink-driving in Notts during December.

Many of the people arrested so far this month have been caught after accidents. Others have been caught by routine patrols, or after they have been shopped by the public.

Police are urging anyone with information about someone who drinks and drives regularly to let them know.

They also want to hear from people who suspect motorists are about to drive after having too much to drink. Mr Charlton said: "If you know a drink-driver, please ring us."

An online poll on the Post's thisisnottingham website revealed that 86% of those who voted would shop a drink-driver.

Carole Whittingham, of Campaign Against Drink Driving, whose son was killed by a drink driver, would not hesitate: "Even if it was someone in my own family, I would shop them in a flash," she said.

She believes the Government needs to bring back anti- drink-drive advertising on TV. "There will always be some people who will disregard any message, but that doesn't stop us trying."

A Post investigation found that of those drivers caught drinking last year, 45 were banned – for a total of more than 75 years.

Fines added up to more than £8,000.

The Post's None for the Road campaign named all drink-drivers caught last December. We are doing the same again on our courts page.

“With the best will in the world you are never going to stop everybody drink driving, so why try? much better to catch every drink driver at every opportunity as the story states that most have been caught after accidents.”
