Disbelief will continue for Anderson after being denied by wonder save

THE look of disbelief on Paul Anderson's face still seems to linger on, long after the final whistle.

At just 22, there are still plenty of years ahead for the winger as a professional footballer.

But, even if he plays another 600 games, he will witness few better saves than the one that denied him a goal at the Madejski Stadium.

Having connected perfectly with a cross from Dexter Blackstock, diving full length to head the ball towards goal, Anderson saw the ball arching accurately into the top corner of the net.

But then Adam Federici stretched every sinew in his body, leaping high to his left to swat away, at a time when the ball already seemed to be beyond him.

It was a truly breath-taking save, one that earned the label of 'world class' from manager Billy Davies.

For Anderson, the moment merely summed up Forest's start to the season, which sees them still searching for their first Championship victory, as well as being knocked out of the Carling Cup by Bradford City.

But, while he remains bewildered at Federici's acrobatics, Anderson is completely certain that Forest are on the right track.

"There are three games gone," said Anderson. "Three games. It is a similar start to last season, I know. But we are positive and there is no reason not to be.

"Even in the Bradford game we were unlucky. We can't keep saying we are unlucky when we have chances but don't make the most of them.

"But it is swings and roundabouts. We are at home next week and hopefully we will get three points then.

"We are creating plenty of chances and we have the players to make the most of those chances, definitely.

"Every player in the side can score goals. In training everyone bangs them in. We proved last year that the players are good enough.

"It was an amazing save. I didn't see it until he clawed it out of the top corner. It would have been nice to get off the mark, of course.

"But that is football. We had a good team performance and hopefully that three points is on the horizon soon.

"In all three games, there have been plenty of positives. There were negatives as well, but you get those in every game, even when you win 6-0.

"We are positive, because we are playing good football. We don't feel as though we have come up against anyone we should be scared of.

"We are going to keep working hard in training and hopefully, we will get those three points sooner rather than later.

"We need to be clinical and take our chances when they come. Then hopefully a goalkeeper will have an off day one day."

Anderson says Forest can be confident about their promotion chances, having retained the majority of the squad that guided them to third place last season.

Although, he admits, the Reds would benefit from one or two quality additions to add some depth to what remains a relatively small group of players.

"The hardest part is getting those first three points, but I am confident that we are going to get there soon," he said. "We are playing some really good football, we just need a break from somewhere.

"We are all very positive, there is no reason why we can't still go on and achieve similar things to last season.

"Hopefully we can get the odd new face in before the end of the transfer window."

In the Championship, it was Cardiff City who grabbed the headlines this weekend, as shock signing Craig Bellamy made an immediate impact in a 4-0 win over Doncaster Rovers.

"If they are not favourites now, I don't know who is," said Anderson. "They have a great squad.

"I don't know about the financial side of things down there, that is not for me to say.

"Hopefully when we come up against them we will do our part, not just for the rest of the teams in the league, but also for ourselves.

"If they want to go out and become the Manchester City of the Championship, that is up to them.

"We have to focus on ourselves. We are confident with the squad we have. We don't need to change much, we just need one or two to give us strength in depth."
