The countdown is on until One Direction hit Nottingham for two nights of gigs at the city's Capital FM Arena.

But will their visit be overshadowed by a very public row with Nottingham's own Jake Bugg?

The spat began when Jake said One Direction should not have been called "the new Beatles" in a magazine interview.

He then dug the knife in further at the NME Awards in London - saying he thought they didn't have a clue when it came to music.

He said: "I don't know how they can really be considered a band though to be honest.

"I'm not too sure. I think the more I play on it, it'll wind them up.

"They're there to look good.

"Music wise? I assume they don't really have a clue. We'll just see. They might do."

When asked what he thought of Harry Styles winning Villain of the Year, he said: "Probably the ugliest one is the best singer. He might know a couple of chords."

One Direction members Louis Tomlinson and Niall Horan responded on Twitter.

Louis said: "Hi @jakebugg do you think slagging off boy bands makes you more indie?"

While Niall hit back with: "Really buggs me that artists we're fans of, flip on us in the press!"

It remains to be seen if the band will be welcome on Jake Bugg's stomping ground - or if the Clifton-born singer will hit out at the band again.

“Everyone is entitled to their own opinion but ****ging other artists off in the press without good reason is uncalled for and doesn't reflect well on his own personality.”

“I would have thought being compared to Paul McCartney in any form would be insulting.

Beatles were over-rated. One Direction are the same but there is more than enough mugs out there buying their music, so good luck to them.”

“NOBODY since the Beatles has been good enough to be called 'the new Beatles', and certainly not this bunch. They're just a manufactured group singing nursery rhymes suitable for kindergarten kids.”
