This is Nottingham

SUSI O'Neill is the director of Digital Consultant, a digital strategy consultancy that helps organisations and individuals build a competitive advantage online and create effective e-commerce solutions. She is also one of the founders of www.creativenottingham.com – a blog that specialises in passing on news about the creative sector in Nottingham, so I thought I'd find out more.

Is digital strategy all about making a good website?

No, it is about using all of the digital communication tools to deliver the best for your business. This can include online project management, best use of mobile technology, and web marketing. It's about using technology to help the people in your business perform at their best.

Is digital strategy just for technology businesses?

Not at all! There are not many digital strategists around, and I am busy consolidating the online presence of big companies and local businesses. My approach is to make sure the client does thorough planning before starting to take their business online. This encompasses all aspects of digital communication, including social networking.

What are the current trends?

Digital communications are fundamental to any business. At the moment people are dabbling in social media, but in 12 months' time those who are not taking this seriously will find themselves at a distinct disadvantage. Social media is going to be an essential aspect of all business marketing and communication. In the US, most companies work with a digital strategist.

What approach do you take?

I always focus on the strengths of the people within an organisation and look for the sweet spot – how they deliver value to their customers – and then work out how to make this effective online. This can include blogging, writing content, and online video. I create a plan of action that will get them in the best place and then set goals that are measurable against this plan.

What is www. creativenottingham. com?

It is a news service blog that helps to connect Nottingham's creative communities by sharing news and information online. It fills the gap in connecting everything in the city's creative sector online. It is non-subsidised and not for profit.

How does it operate?

It scans blogs for relevant news, sets up alerts, and finds things that are not often published in traditional media, such as exhibitions, talks, and business investment opportunities. We use the latest blogging tools, twitter and online video too – including live broadcasting at events.

How do we get involved with the site?

It's easy! We welcome guest bloggers and invite people to post comments and discuss the things they read on the site. We are currently exploring an idea to brand the creative sector in +Nottingham, for example. We update the site three times a week, and invite you all to contribute!

As well as getting involved with www.creativenottingham.com keep e-mailing your news, views and comments on creative Nottingham to mark@markshaw.co.uk.
