FIVE people have been injured in a multi-car crash near a roundabout on the A52.

The Nottingham-bound carriageway of the road between the M1 and Bardill's roundabout, Stapleford was closed after the accident at 4pm today.

It is thought one car went into the back of another near the roundabout and two other vehicles crashed while trying to avoid them.

East Midlands Ambulance Service (EMAS) treated one motorist with a suspected seizure, another with spinal injuries and three other 'walking wounded' patients.

Five ambulances and a fast response vehicle attended as well as fire crews and Notts Police.

Alan Marwood from EMAS said four cars were involved in the crash.

He said: "It was a typical fast road collision with vehicles travelling at relatively high speeds and coming to a sudden halt.

"The fire brigade cut two people out of their cars and there was an excellent response from police to keep the traffic moving."

The Derby-bound carriageway of the A52 has remained open. The Nottingham-bound carriageway has now reopened although there are delays of 40 minutes.

The Highways Agency said at it's height, the gridlock led to delays of two-and-a-half hours.

    “@ Steve, Notts
    - I know what you mean, I've never understood why people decide "Oh ok, I'll just stop at the line before I enter the roundabout, yep thats good, right now I shall look to my right for traffic - no traffic! Brilliant, I'll be off now." You're supposed to slow down when approaching the roundabout WHILST being alert of who is in front of you AND the flow to your right!
    @ BJ Mann
    Dude,
"when the speed limit is reduced to an inappropriate level such as 40mph then drivers concentration drops as they fall asleep"
Thats not true about the falling asleep thing, but I find that looking out for speed limits KEEPS me alert when driving. They're there for a reason because some idiots would not slow down to an appropriate speed when approaching the roundabout, therefore causing accidents.

That junction is a mess, lights change too quickly. Speed cameras would be a good idea to make people slow down. It would be good if the roundabout was like the previous one on the A52 (via Nottingham - the one near the Bramcote leisure centre and sherwin arms).”

“j,leic. You obviously do not know this island very well if you think it is possible to enter and leave the roundabout without stopping. If you are approaching from Nottingham and wish to turn right to Stapleford you go in the outside lane, get 3/4's round and another set of lights are on red. If there is already a car waiting at these lights due to them being red the 2nd cars back end is in the outside lane of what continues on the A52 with drivers flying round the island not realising that stationary traffic are still on it waiting at a red light. Be confident about circumstances before you pass comment!”

“OK, I give up. Is that the real Mr Mann, or the one who has been posting pastiches for the last week or so?

The fact that it is impossible to tell speaks volumes.

    I particularly liked

THE BEST PERSON TO DECIDE A SAFE SPEED IS THE COMPETENT MOTORIST.

It never seems to have occurred to him that while he may be convinced that he is one of those competent motorists, no-one in their right mind would trust him to make those kinds of decisions for himself given his track record.”

“didnt the guy who crashed first have a seizure/heart attack?
Accidents happen, and i feel for all the people who were primarily involved with the crash. yes it caused mayhem, and yes the roundabout can be a bit pants, and i completely understand people are in a hurry at that time to get home, but im just thankful i wasnt the one being cut out of the car.”

“There is nothing wrong with this junction, it has plenty of signs telling you which lane to be in and a 40mph limit, it is bad driving that causes accidents.”

“BJ Mann....the road in question is a trunk road. Therefore it has nothing to do with the city or county council but is the responsibility of the Highways Agency. Still, never let the facts get in the way of a good rant!”

“This is quite simply human error there can never be an excuse for running into the back of the car in front. It means you haven¿t kept your distance. However what I have noticed is a lot of shunts are caused when the car in front approaches a junction or roundabout with no traffic coming and for some strange reason stops dead at the junction irrespective of a stop sign, the driver behind having looked to the right assumes the car in front is going to drive on and by the time they look forward have run into the back of the over cautious driver in front. Not an excuse but often the cause.”

“Oh yes Plonk why didn't we think of that?

What - demolish 60 houses, close the garden centre, close the school, build it across the green belt and spend upwards of ¿60m on that junction.

    Obvious answer.”

    “Does i stand for idiot???

How many times do you have to be told that reducing the speed limit just leads to more not fewer accidents.

Speed limits are a money making sCam, the brainchild of Congestion makers such as Ken Livingstone and George who have never understood the first thing about driving.
