BILLY Davies believes he will become a better manager after masterminding Nottingham Forest's survival bid last season.

The Reds boss is convinced the experience of a relegation battle will make everyone at the club better prepared for a fresh campaign in the Championship.

The challenge of keeping Forest out of League One was a new one for Davies, who had only previously been involved in battles at the other end of the table.

The Scott did have a brief spell in charge at Pride Park as Derby were scrapping to avoid the drop from the Premiership.

But he has otherwise only been involved in promotion challenges with Preston and the Rams.

"Having spent the last three or four seasons competing at the top end of the table, preparing for play-offs and play-off finals and winning promotion – it was a whole new experience," he said. "I have to say it was very difficult to come in and manage a club in this position. It was a big test.

"But it was a great experience. We have learned from it and we will be better for it in the future.

"It is more enjoyable at the top end than the bottom, I will tell you that.

"It is a different skill. But you can only get through it by experiencing it."

Davies is already planning to ensure that Forest do not suffer another relegation fight this coming season.

He has already added Dele Adebola to his Forest ranks on a free transfer from Bristol City and is actively pursuing six or seven other players, with offers submitted for several targets.

Paul McKenna (Preston), David McGoldrick (Southampton), Matt Mills (Doncaster), Chris Gunter (Spurs), Dexter Blackstock (QPR) and Gary McSheffrey are all high on their list of targets.

The club is still considering a move for Hoops keeper Lee Camp.
