PLENTY going on this weekend including appearances by two gentlemen who started out in the folk clubs but whose appeal over the years has endeared them to a much wider audience. Richard Digance first came to our attention as one half of Pisces before setting out on a solo career as a singer/songwriter whose act contained a lot of humour, finding himself in the charts during the seventies with his football anthem Earl's A Winger. Since then he has made his mark as an author, a member of various TV quiz and panel shows while still finding time to tour with his latest collection of songs and stories. He is in concert tonight at Nottingham Playhouse.
When Bernard Wrigley first came to the notice of the national folk scene he was already established as an actor around the theatre groups of his native North West. Since then he has appeared in Emmerdale, Coronation Street and various TV comedies, as well as a couple of cult films. Bernard too still manages to get around the folk clubs with his guitar and concertinas and he will be the guest at the National Forest Folk Club at Moira Miners' Welfare, also tonight.
Saturday sees Farnsfield Acoustics' monthly guest Steve Knightley taking time off from Show Of Hands to embark on one of his solo tours featuring a programme of his own hard-hitting compositions and this time he will be supported by a duo attracting a lot of attention Phil Henry and Hannah Martin – the venue this month is Papplewick Village Hall. For dance enthusiasts there is a ceilidh in the Iconic Suite of The Masonic Hall in Goldsmith Street with Jigabit providing the music and calling; meanwhile at the Star Inn, Middle Street, Beeston, the Phil Langran Band will be in concert.
Na Mara are guests at Carrington Triangle, the Gladstone, Loscoe Road, Carrington, on Wednesday while on Thursday ex-Crucible member Gavin Davenport is guest at Derby Traditional Music Club, Old Derby Gaol, Friargate.
