NOTTS could get a £46m boost from new Hollywood blockbuster Robin Hood.

Tourism bosses believe an extra five million people could visit the county when the film, starring Russell Crowe, hits screens worldwide in May.

Nottingham City Council, Notts County Council and other agencies are working to ensure visitors get a full Robin Hood experience.

A Robin Hood Month will celebrate the county's links with the legend.

City council plans include:

Showing the trailer on a large screen in the city centre.

Trying to break the record for the most people dressed as Robin Hood in Old Market Square.

Opening a Robin Hood attraction.

Notts County Council is set to spend £50,000 on promotions including:

Creating a film about Sherwood Forest, to be included in DVDs of the movie.

Holding a regional premiere of the film.

Mike Baulcombe, tourism leader at Experience Notts, said: "A 10 per cent increase in overnight visitors to Nottinghamshire would represent an additional £46m for the economy."

The £46m figure is more than four times what Trent Bridge's staging of the ICC World Twenty20 brought to the area.

“Film bluff outside the Broadway. But its all the world wide pre film hype, merchandising and advertising that rakes the crowds in.
The reviews for Avatar are average but have you seen the queues to see it? Have you seen its gross take so far???
Oh and every time l've gone to see a film the critics rate l'm usually left wondering what l'm looking at more importantly what l've paid for!”

“I think most of you need to step back into reality.

We had the tales of robin hood for years, to be honest I only went once as a kid and it scared the #### out of me. If it really was that good then it would have made a profit wouldn't it? As it stands, it made a loss.

So what are you all suggesting? Sink money into bigger and better attractions so that they can also make a loss? Or are these attractions somehow going to make a profit? If so then how when others have failed.

I'm all for Nottingham making a song and dance about Robin Hood. I know they are currently making plans for new tourist attractions. But we have to be realistic about this.

Robin hood isn't important for our economy to thrive, our economy isn't based on tourism (as the closue of most of our tourist attractions has proven). Like it or not our economy is based on retail, so if anything needs sorting out then it's broadmarsh”
