A COUNCIL has approved plans to spend £250,000 a year on solar panels.

Notts County Council launched the SunVolt scheme in December 2011 when the cabinet agreed to invest £800,000 in solar panels on council buildings.

  1. The finishing touches are put to a solar farm in the New Forest which covers 30 acres of former farmland

To date £620,000 of the £800,000 has been invested in over 1,300 panels.

And the council is looking at continuing the programme by investing £250,000 a year on the panels from 2013-14 to 2016-17.

Richard Butler, chairman of the environment and sustainability committee at the council, said: "It's good news for the environment and our efforts to protect it, but it's also good news for the council as it generates electricity for us as well.

"The decision was unanimous and I am pleased it was so well supported."
