THE move to allow unelected officials to make decisions on key development projects in Rushcliffe has been attacked.

Coun Andrew Wilkie, chairman of Cotgrave Town Council, says major developments will have a major effect on the future of the borough.

But he claims the rights of local councillors to voice their views on these has been taken away by the current planning process.

He is particularly concerned about developments proposed for Cotgrave Colliery site, Sharphill Wood at Edwalton and Tollerton Airport.

"Sharphill Wood has been refused at officer level without going to the development control committee and is now subject to a public inquiry," Mr Wilkie said.

"Surely such important decisions should be made by elected members?

"The grounds for refusal of Sharphill Wood may be technically complex and should be subject to scrutiny and advice by officers but the decision should remain with the elected members."

Susan Harley, head of planning at Rushcliffe Borough Council, said: "The application for Sharphill was refused planning permission by officers under the powers delegated to them by the council."
