BASFORD councillor Mick Newton will not stand for the Labour Party in May's local elections.

Nottingham City Council's standards sub-committee held a hearing to discuss the behaviour of Mr Newton after he transferred "inappropriate material" to a computer, which broke the councillors' code of conduct.

His case was heard in private due to mental health grounds.

The committee decided to publicly censure him for his actions.

Mr Newton said: "I regret my actions and accept the findings of the standards board.

"My actions were designed to harm or destroy myself, no one else."

He was suspended from the Labour Party when the incident came to light and failed to pay for his party subscription last month, which means his membership has expired, but Mr Newton said he is giving "serious consideration" to standing as an independent candidate.
