World Cup bid under threat from planning move
RUSHCLIFFE borough councillors are aiming to block plans to build about 10,000 homes at Gamston and Clifton.
It would mean a massive blow for Nottingham's World Cup bid, which includes a new stadium at Gamston and 4,500 homes.
If the homes are not built, cash for the stadium will be difficult to find.
A council working group, which is considering potential areas for urban extension in Rushcliffe, has rejected Gamston and Clifton as options for housing at this stage.
The Government says 15,000 new houses must be built in Rushcliffe by 2026 and at least 10,600 must be built in and around West Bridgford and Gamston.
But councillors are not supporting any alternative areas for the housing, prompting fears the council could lose control of its planning process.
Council leader Coun Neil Clarke said the Government's housing allocation for Rushcliffe was "far too great".
The working group chairman, Coun David Bell, said: "The council is not prepared to support those sites.
"The key reasons, of course, are the attack on the green belt, loss of urban space, and the danger of villages joining each other and the pressure that will put on the infrastructure and the road network."
The group's findings will be presented to the borough council's cabinet. A decision is expected at a later date.

“The majority of supporters travel to the city centre and then head to the football ground”

“Fact one - the minority of Nottinghamshire's population live in the City of Nottingham. Fact two - the majority of Nottinghamshire's population live outside of the City of Nottingham. Fact three - Nottingham City Council was made a unitary authority in 1997 by New Labour in order that the minority could impose their will on the majority. Fact four - the majority of workers outside of the City boundary do not work in the City and are increasingly shopping elsewhere because it has become a horrible dirty and dangerous place. Fact five - the sooner the City Council loses its unitary status and is brought back under the democratic control of the majority the better for everyone. These loonies at City Hall need to be flushed out once and for all.”

“Nottingham Forest is a city team not a county team so why not put it in within the city limits, how about in the Eastcroft area, sorry I forgot Nottingham City have that earmaked for even more overpriced apartments that nobody wants!”

“Yet another reason why the rural Tory Nimby counci's should have absolutely nothing to do with the conurbation. For all of those selfish people who like all the advantages of living in a conurbation but none of the inconvenience why don't you go and live in the country not the suburbs which are a natural extension of the city and should be administered by the city.?The greenbelt/brown belt argument is a complete red herring. The green belt mostly consists of ecologically sterile farmland and the brownfield sites that remain are not feasible for the current demand. The green belt must be revised because of the fact we need the housing because we are all living longer. It's not an option not to build houses. Not only that why should people living within the city administrative area have to put up with greater overcrowding, pollution , congestion etc just so you lot can have it with gravy? Nobody wanted eco villages at RAF Newton and nobody wants any houses south of the river. No wonder the government has to get involved. If this democratic disgrace continues i.e. the city of Nottingham held ransom by these articficially created councils(40 years old thats all) then the houses and the money will go elsewhere. Nottingham desperately needs to increase its boundaries as the current situation is intolerable with people who have no real interest in the expansion of the city continually stifling it's growth to the detriment of those who actually live there. Redraw the boundaries to include all suburban areas and to allow reasonable growth and have one unitary council for the city and one for the county and get rid of the rest of the other cornershop operations. I think after everything that's happened we would sanction having a few less politicians. One City. One Council.”

“Because nobody is asking NFFC to fund the new stadium. This is not NFFC proposing to build a new stadium to host World Cup games, but rather the local authorities. The clue is in the story 'If the homes are not built, cash for the stadium will be difficult to find'. I imagine it will work pretty much the same way that MCFC became tenants at Eastlands.”

“"I am fully behind the new stadium because I have not got enough money to replace the 40 year old Main Stand and the yearly maintenance is getting more costly."
What makes you think it would be not more expensive for a new stadium?
It surely does not take long to work out that the costs of a new stadium would significantly dwarf those of maintaining the City Ground.”

“I am fully behind the new stadium because I have not got enough money to replace the 40 year old Main Stand and the yearly maintenance is getting more costly. But hey, lets stay here and watch it slowly fall to pieces and be laughed at by opposing fans.”

“From what i have seen the plans as a whole include a football ground, housing, parkway, shopping district, country parks, school, new road system and more but i forget not to mention the land freed up by the decomission of the city ground, being a construction worker myself and a forest fan and dog owner (country parks) i think its a great idea for me (living in edwalton) and alot of other people in Nottingham or who want to come into the city and anyone who is against the plan is being either selfish or narrow minded and i would like to ask those who are against the use of SOME of the green belt what use you are currently making of this land”
