WORK on Beeston's new Tesco superstore is to begin later this month, the company has confirmed.

Bosses say building of the new store in Station Road is to get under way in the next fortnight – six years after Tesco was first granted planning permission to develop the site.

Tony Fletcher, Tesco's corporate affairs manager, said: "We are delighted. Contractors have moved on site and they are getting it ready to start."

Archaeological surveys of the site need to be signed off but Mr Fletcher said, as long as week begins shortly, he expects the store to be open by the end of the year."

The prospect of a new Tesco superstore in Beeston – which is expected to create up to 420 jobs – has been on the cards since Broxtowe Borough Council first granted it permission in 2004.

The site was cleared but has remained unused.

Councillors frustrated by delays in developing the land wrote to Tesco in July 2008 calling for the company to begin work or sell up.

Tesco then submitted a fresh planning application for a larger store in October 2008, which was granted permission last June.

Last month, diggers returned to resume clearing work.

Beeston borough and county councillor Pat Lally said: "I am glad to see work is due to begin.

"A lot of work has been done by all parties to try to get the best scheme. It has been a roller-coaster ride.

"Hopefully this store will be an asset to Beeston."

The 9,185sq-metre store has a mezzanine level, a cafe and 440 car-parking spaces.

The size increased by 10% from the original application, and has nearly two-thirds more floor space because of the new mezzanine floor.

The council received more than 560 objections to the plan, including a petition signed by 1,380 people.

A number of conditions were imposed by the council in approving the plan, including for Tesco to make a contribution to the redevelopment of Beeston town centre and to improve the Middle Street and Station Road junction.

“Beeston Resident the square is why we need the tram; I think there's a plan to develop it with new units or something.

We do not need Tesco, and I hope its effect may not be too bad.”

“There wont be much left for people to come and see in Beeston when the tram comes even if there is a Tesco, look at Beeston now, half the shops in the square are empty,no decent market .
The only benefit of the tram will be people will be able to get away from beeston and find some decent shops and stores in Nottingham quicker.
why not scrap the silly tram idea,if you want a decent choice of shopping theres always Long eaton down the road, also the people there seem more happier and friendly in the shops, more community spirited.”

“No; I think you'll find that the extra people who come in as the result of the tram want something to come to...”

“To mix posts, Beeston needs a tram like it needs a hole in the head.”

“Beeston needs a tram, not a tesco.

Lets hope the tram might nulify some of the negative effect this will have.”
