A theatre porter with Nottingham University Hospitals Trust, he had to use an old supermarket trolley to collect gas canisters.
On the day of the accident a stone caught under the back wheel, causing it to swerve into the path of an oncoming car.
Mr Beresford, of Wollaton Park Estate, was injured trying to steady the trolley and now has chronic knee problems.
His union's solicitors, Thompsons, said the trust should have provided something safer than a supermarket trolley.
The NHS settled for a compensation amount more than 14 times the original offer.
The amount has not been revealed.
Mr Beresford said: "I have had to give up work and my golf, and my family have seen me go through hell."
A trust spokesman said: "We apologise to Mr Beresford for the pain and distress caused."

“Well, 64 years old, great timing, The trust did not provide the correct mode of transport, they probably did not provide the shopping trolley either, so if someone asked you to carry a 232 bar cylinder about in an old trolley, you would probably refuse?”
