TRAINING provided by Derby College is helping a small family joinery and flooring business to expand across the East Midlands.

Statham and Sons in Sandiacre, which offers a range of floor fitting and flooring supplies services, was formed in 2009 by owner Matt Statham.

Matt, who has more than 15 years' experience in the joinery trade, decided to go it alone after being made redundant, but was surprised when a year later his son Liam chose to join him. Liam, who is now 21, gave up a place to study biology at the University of Nottingham and instead embarked on an NVQ joinery course at Derby College.

Inspired by his decision, Liam's younger brother Tom, 18, also opted to join the family business and is currently on the college's joinery apprenticeship scheme.

Three years on, the family business is thriving and recently established a sister company, Statham Installations, headed by Liam.

Matt originally intended to be a one-man band but is pleased that both his sons have chosen to work with him.

He said: "I never expected Liam to join the family business. We assumed he would take up his place at university. Both lads work very hard and we all get on well. The hours are long and we often work weekends and into the evenings but we enjoy what we do and win most of jobs through recommendations."
