POLICE are looking at CCTV footage of vandals who defaced the Brian Clough statue after Nottingham City Council reported the incident on Friday.

White paint was sprayed on the statue on Wednesday night and was cleaned off by city council staff.

Inspector Paul Winter, of Notts Police, said: "This matter was reported to us by Nottingham City Council and arrangements have been made for officers to view the CCTV footage.

"Inquiries will be continuing, and I would ask anyone who has information about who was responsible to contact police."

The £70,000 statue, at the junction of King Street and Queen Street, was unveiled by Brian's widow Barbara Clough in November.

Anyone with information should call 0115 967 0999 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

“I am amazed that it has taken so long, for this legend of a man to have his statue vandalised in this way, after all if they do catch the no brain that did it, all he / she will say is, so what? I was drunk, didn't know what I was doing, isn't that they all say.”

“The cretin who was responsible for this outrage has obviously underestimated the potential backlash. Few things unite Derby and Nottingham but the Brian Clough Way (A52) and his football legend are two of them. Rams fans are also outraged that his memory has been besmirched in this way. They bring shame on the city of Nottingham with their senseless actions.”

“I hope the scumbag who did this is not afforded the luxury of anonimity when he's caught. I always had concerns about it's siting in the city centre; should have been outside the City Ground. What's also disgraceful is that Cloughie was described as "the former Forest captain" in this joke of a newspaper.
NEP aren't you supposed to proof read stuff before you go to print?”

“This should have been reported to the police yesterday! What's taken the council a whole twenty-four hours? Oh, and daleabb, I think you'll find it's brainless chavs who cause this sort of vandalism, not students.”
