THE sense of occasion surrounding a Wembley

appearance meant even Brian Clough bowed to convention, swapping his trademark green sweatshirt for a smart blazer

.

And now one of the legendary manager's jackets will be auctioned off to raise money for the Post's £500,000 Maggie's appeal.

It has been donated by former Post photographer Trevor Barlett, a good pal of Cloughie.

Old Big 'Ead wore the navy blue jacket at Wembley; years later Cloughie gave it to Trevor as a keepsake.

Trevor, 65, said: "It must have been eight years ago. I had gone to take some pictures at his house and he said, 'I have a gift for you.'

"He gave me the jacket... but first he put his hand in the pockets to make sure there wasn't any money in!

"It's in pristine condition."

Trevor became a close pal of the Forest legend after taking hundreds of photos of him during his years at the Post.

Trevor said it was appropriate that the jacket should be used to help build a cancer caring centre in Nottingham as Cloughie had battled stomach cancer before he died in 2004.

Trevor said: "I think he'd have been very pleased to have supported Maggie's. It's a wonderful charity."

Trevor is backing the appeal after his sister Susan Williams, who lived in West Bridgford, died from bowel cancer aged 51.

The jacket will be auctioned at Mansell's centenary ball at Colwick Hall on October 10 in aid of Maggie's. It is hoped it will raise at least £500.

Mansell's regional managing director Ian Taylor said the Clough jacket was attracting a lot of interest.

"We're extremely grateful for such an important piece of personal memorabilia for the auction, and there's tremendous excitement," he said.

"We've got some other great auction lots for guests on the night which, together with proceeds from the raffle and event tickets, will all be going to Maggie's. Huge thanks go to our employees, partners and subcontractors."
