Future looking cloudy for two historic Nottingham pubs
THE future of two historic Nottingham pubs is under threat.
The parent company of Ye Olde Salutation Inn and the Royal Children has gone into liquidation.
Chimpeasy Limited, owner of the two pubs, went into voluntary liquidation on December 22.
The company's shareholders will have the final say on whether to keep the pubs running.
The Salutation is one of three Nottingham pubs that claim to be the oldest in the city.
It is believed that the inn, in Hounds Gate, was built on the site of an old alehouse in 1240 and served as a workshop and home for a tanner.
Caves beneath the building are said to date from the 9th century. Historians say they were part of a Saxon farm.
Steve Westby, chairman of Nottingham Camra, said: "It would be sad to see it go because the Salutation has got such a strong history.
"It says 1240 on the side of the building and you can trace its history back to those times.
"The Salutation is a wonderful old pub and we would be devastated if it closed.
"It would be a travesty."
The neighbouring Royal Children is named after the children of Princess Anne, who stayed in the city after fleeing London during rebellions against her father, King James II, who subsequently abdicated in 1688.
The Post was unable to contact Chimpeasy Limited and nobody at either pub was available to comment.

“I say Tuppence, Wrth, I see the score,
The NuLabours gonna knock down my door,
Who is right and who is wrong??
Will you tell me, tell me now who's writing this song
I might only have 3 GCSEs
But this rapping thing is quite a disease
You might appreciate
That this "degenerate"
Position might have a fair chance
So if we make music that make people dance
I'm getting in it, on it, making you guys smile!
You know, to an Apserger's kid, that makes my life worthwhile
I'm gonna go now,
I'll let you know, now
That you just made my whole life so right
I always knew that I would be somethin....now I am ginna turn out my bedroom light!”

“Our pubs, our history, our own social life,
The place we can go with a husband, a wife,
A boyfriend, a girlfriend, or a mate or two...
And drown all our sorrows in a quick drink or two.
But now they are closing at a frightening rate,
In Hockley and Sneinton, and even Friargate.
So what could be causing this dearth of drink places?
Look no further than all our nice Councillors' faces.
Let's imagine a world without social interaction,
No-one visits Nottnam, there is no attraction.
The Dragon, the Bluebell and Chambers are gone
All that's left is a Wetherspoons and Lloyds No 1.
What IS in their places? I'll let you all guess...
That's right! We're surrounded by Tesco Express.
Instead of "Time at the bar", there's a sound far scarier:
"There's an unexpected item in the bagging area!"
No jobs and no spirit, the city is dying,
No-one has any money, but not for lack of trying.
Whole industries suffer, the economy is dead,
And all from just one thing Mr Councillor said.
Fast forward the years and we're in 2020,
Mansfield Road's silent, the Market Square's empty...
Believe what I say, as the end is quite near,
If our beloved locals do not reappear.
We need to protest! Fight for rights as drinkers!
We're born to rock legends! We're do-ers, not thinkers!
Believe in your pub, in the grape and the grain!
Stop this decay! Oh, please, halt the pain!
This is all in our hands, we so need all our pubs,
To bring happy hours and serve decent, cheap grub!
We need Nottingham's pubs to pull us back from the brink...
So, join me in a toast...and this one's TO DRINK.
If you think it's unlikely we'll end up this way,
You're wrong! It could happen! We can keep it at bay!
If you really don't believe it, just imagine this:
A life where we cannot go out on the p**s,”

“I hope that these two pubs are listed buildings and do not end up like the Flying Horse In the New Market Square ,cannot call it old market square because it is grotesque just like the Royal Centre The new Art Gallery and the Corner House , soon Nottingham will have no heritage left .”
