OPPONENTS to the expansion of the Eastcroft incinerator gave their closing statements to a public inquiry this morning.

Nigel Lee, representing Nottingham Against Incineration and Landfill (NAIL), told the inspector that the operators of the plant had failed to show a need to increase its capacity.

Waste Recycling Group (WRG) wants to increase the capacity of the incinerator, off London Road, from 150,000 tonnes a year to 250,000 tonnes.

"Against the very weak case of need for an expanded incinerator, expansion would cause significant adverse impact," he said.

"Evidence given to this inquiry has demonstrated that the existing incinerator has deterred high quality investment in the surrounding area, and expansion would send a message to potential investors to prolong the blight.

"Evidence has also shown considerable public anxiety about the incinerator, and more particularly about WRG's poor record of managing their existing incinerator.

"NAIL therefore supports the city council in opposing expansion of the incinerator."

The city council and WRG were due to give their closing statements to the inquiry at Nottingham's Hilton Hotel later today.

“In a modern City like Nottingham why is the Council even considering increasing this monstrosity ?
With recycling rates on the increase and modern methods of treating waste, ie, Anaerobic Digestion available, which are cheaper to build and run, there is no real need for this development, and can only be a bad thing for Nottingham.”

“Incinerators are outdated, and potentially dangerous..so why is this even being considered. Why not go for Anaerobic Digestion, a more modern and cost effective method of waste management, which has no detrimental health effects....or are we going to stay in the dark ages forever ?”

“Here here jonny. If the City council let this through, it will make a mockery of the planning system.
    Reduce reuse recycle”

“incinerators are a dodgy waste of time.Eastcroft has had too many breaches, its inefficeient & toxic. Anaerobic digesters are common in Germany, should be the same here.”
