FULL details of the plan to build 4,500 homes and a football stadium for the 2018 World Cup can today be revealed.

A group including Nottingham Forest, the city council and landowners will submit a proposal to Rushcliffe Borough Council this week for land east of Gamston.

The submission will include:

A development of 4,500 homes, two primary schools, a secondary school and a district shopping centre.

A £100m stadium with capacity for 45,000 fans which would be the cornerstone of Nottingham's World Cup Bid.

Three country parks plus parks and community sports facilities.

Realignment of the A52 and duelling of the Ling's Bar Road.

Mark Arthur, chief executive of Nottingham Forest, said: "If the tournament goes to Leicester or Derby, Nottingham's position as the capital of the East Midlands will be eroded."

However it emerged last night that Rushcliffe Borough Council has withdrawn from the World Cup bid.

“Some people might not want a new Stadium, but others think it¿s a great idea, which could bring a lot more to the city.

Look at what the Nottingham Arena has done, we now have people coming in most nights into the city to see bands and shows whereas previously you had to go to Sheffield or Birmingham, and it is a great new home for the Panthers. Why should Forest not do the same. However look at where we got it wrong; Westfield were looking to redevelop Broadmarsh, but someone, somewhere, put a stop to it, so Westfield went to Derby and now they are raking in the consumers to a fantastic new centre, whereas back at Broadmarsh, units are empty and quite a few that are not, aren¿t worth going to. Even my son prefers to go into Derby now with his mates, just to go round the centre and the cinema, and I cant blame him. And yes I do like the trams and look forward to the next extensions to the line.

Put this with DC having their stadium, which can hold even bigger concerts / games and Nottingham is really starting to lose out.
Don¿t get me wrong, I¿m not sure whether Gamston is the right place or not, I¿m not a planning officer, green activist or councillor, but I do know that I am proud of my Nottingham heritage, of being a Forest supporter and both the men in green (Clough/Hood) and I want the city to continue to grow in stature.

And I know some may bemoan me, but I agree with the ¿Ambitious for Nottingham¿ as you can probably tell¿.

(Now sit back and wait for the flack)”

“The City Council Leader, Jon Collins, is simply on an ego trip to distract most city residents of the dismal state of the City's health, education and crime statistics. By nailing his colours to the hopeless cause of mediocre World Cup matches (North Korea v Serbia or Ukraine v Paraguay anyone?) he is trying to convince us that the World Cup is the best thing that could happen to Nottingham. In the meantime Mark Arthur mischievously throws in the emotional threat that Nottingham will somehow lose its regional capital status if Forest don't get a brand new stadium built at the taxpayers' expense. Nice try but let's face it the only person who will benefit is Nigel Doughty who by capturing most of the bar and food spend in the new stadium miles away from Trent Bridge (you will need to get there early to get a parking space as everyone will have to drive) will be able to reduce his £6m a year subsidy by a million or three, while fans lose the experience of one of the best (and most convenient) grounds to visit on matchday. Of course once Forest get to the Prem they will find that Prem football has peaked and that the delights of playing Wolves, Stoke, Birmingham, Wigan and Bolton at £40 a throw might not appeal to 35,000 people every fortnight. Still fans don't matter once you are a big team at the Premier League trough.
Even without the pointlessness of the City Council (who cannot live within their current means and are about to embark on a massive cost saving exercise again) investing money they don't have on a 10 day "festival of football" (maybe!) what about the environmental impact? The City Council and Jon Collins have gone out of their way to present their environmental credentials but now on one single policy decision we see exactly what they think of screwing up the environment with no public transport facilities to the stadium and another 8,000 commuters living in an area with no train/tram links. Still the commuters will all have to pay the workplace parking levy so that's quite smart thinking, albeit environmental hooliganism.
Thank goodness the County Council and Rushcliffe BC have seen the writing on the wall and are refusing to be railroaded by an opportunistic and greedy Forest who can't fill their current, perfectly adequate ground and a City Council led by a meddling egomaniac desperate to divert attention away from what's really going on on his watch. The moment the City Council unilaterally decided that building a new stadium could only happen at Gamston, it irretrievably ruined the city's bid for 2018/2022.
Don't back a fatally flawed bid, bin it!”

“Roll on next year and hopefully remove these scandalous Labour muppets and get us a Party that wants to conserve the green belt we have, as really there is not a lot left!! Let sense prevail. We do not want all this building and fairytale dreams being dumped outside the city If that is what you want City Council, look elsewhere as their are plenty of sites within your boundaries to satisfy your needs!!!”

    “Tony, Retford

Are you seriously suggesting that Forest owe money to the council that is not reflected in the council accounts?”

“Football? Boring. Nottingham as capital of East Midlands? What a joke. Capital of gun crime, crazy anti business council, and just about one of the most unpleasant places around best seen from the rear view mirror.

Keep those crazy Nottm City Council schemes away from the rest of the County!”
