JON Collins, the leader of Nottingham City Council, has been officially announced as chairman of a regeneration body.

The move means that the council's control of One Nottingham, a partnership of city businesses, the voluntary sector and health service, is strengthened.

Councillors on the authority's executive board will be appointed as chairmen or vice chairmen of the body's committees.

They carry out detailed work on particular subjects, such as health or economic development.

The council's chief executive, Jane Todd, will lead an executive group of One Nottingham.

Coun Collins (pictured) succeeds Nottingham North MP, Graham Allen as chairman.

He previously chaired the forerunner of One Nottingham, which was known as the One City Partnership. At that time the board became divided and it suspended itself in 2004 following a damning review from the Government Office for the East Midlands.

At a meeting of the council's executive board, which approved the changes, opposition Liberal Democrat councillor Tony Sutton said there were "operational advantages" in the current changes. But he added: "We must make sure other groups bring a strong input."

But Labour councillor Jane Urquhart said: "It seems to me the board is quite well balanced and has independent voices on it."

One Nottingham. which has a budget of about £15m a year, aims to bring together all sectors of society to deliver a long term vision for the city.

“He¿s supposed to be on the police committee, so this is two that he¿s just joined. Makes me wonder what he¿s been doing for the last few years (apart from the known screw ups). Is there an election coming?”

“How many more expensive unelected quango authorities do we need in Nottingham? This is just empire building for the sake of it. If the council wanted to stimulate the local economy they could make a start by cutting taxes and ridiculous parking charges.”

“This smacks of another case of jobs for the boys, who would employ a second rate incompetent who has anything but the Midas touch, edegeneration is certainly the term i would use.

Given his previous performance, no one in the private sector would touch him, so is this the case of find him something.”

“Could it be that the Collins Crew are just ensuring that they have a job to go to after they are defeated at the next election?”

“Should that not read "degeneration body".
Another useless money wasting quango talking lots, producing nothing but spin and representing an astonishing waste of public money.”

“It seems that 'damning reviews' follow this man arround like a bad smell. Were he ever to apply for a job in the real world his CV would be a litany of failure, why do we continue to pay for second-rate employees like this one who have failed to deliver time and time again?

Let's get some proven businessmen in to regenerate the City, people who have shown that they have the skills and application to actually do the job required. Not low-skilled people like these who are just shifted around in an attempt to justify their cost.”

    “Exactly Chris!

Here we go again, jobs for the boys (and girls Ms Todd?). These new Labour cronies are every bit as sleezy and untrustworthy than the Tories. They, along with their friends will continue to slap each others backs and ensure that they are never out of work... unlike the thousands that have been made redundant by these modern day masons.

Another "Regeneration" body to do absolutely diddly squat.”
