During the same period, the amount of municipal waste sent to landfill has fallen from 34.5 per cent (2005-06) to 11.5 per cent (2011-12) and the amount sent to Eastcroft incinerator to fuel the district heating system has risen from 38.1 per cent to 56.2 per cent.
Alan Clark, city council Energy and Sustainability portfolio holder, said: "The increase of waste going to incineration is largely due to diverting waste from landfill to provide energy from waste and reduce our carbon and other emissions."
