A NOTTINGHAM doctor wants to provide emergency aid by air to countries hit by disasters after setting up his own consultancy firm.

Dr Sohail Nasti, of Hyson Green, wants to boost relief work in countries affected by catastrophes like earthquakes, tsunamis and terrorism.

The 34-year-old's firm Mother Helpage Worldwide has recruited rescue pilots, engineers, doctors and IT specialists.

Since being formed in 1994, it has helped victims of the 2004 tsunami in Sri Lanka, the 2005 earthquake in Kashmir and Cyclone Nargis, in Burma, in 2008.

But in recent months the company has added air rescue to its operations, so staff can fly to disaster zones by helicopter or plane at short notice.

Sea rescue training is also under way so workers in coastal areas of countries such as Indonesia are better prepared.

Dr Nasti, a former medic at the Queen's Medical Centre, said his aim was to be able to fly to affected countries at a week's notice.

He said: "I want to show human beings that we can work together to make the world a better place.

"Whenever there is a disaster everyone is trying to provide food and blankets and often the wider perspective is missed.

"Our rescue team is specialised in setting up temporary small hospitals and maternity service wards during disasters."

Dr Nasti set up the charity while living in the Indian area of Kashmir in 1994 as a teenager after the death of his mother Jamilah Massarat.

His work started by helping communities in a local village before using his medical training to support people hit by disasters.

He said: "I wanted to return something to my mum, who brought me into this world, and teach people how to give respect to the elderly.

"Life is very short and I was seeing so many deaths."

In 2004, after the Boxing Day Tsunami in Sri Lanka, Dr Nasti gave medical care to families and provided counseling to dozens of patients suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder.

Dr Nasti said: "Every year disasters happen and I think my contribution to it has really brought a good change."

Anyone who wants to contribute to the company's work can email Dr Nasti on motherhelpageuk@googlemail.com.
