REMOTE controlled helicopter flying and fire lighting were among the activities as Scouts in Notts invited children from Poland, Czech Republic and Slovakia to join their ranks.

The 5th Mansfield Sea Scouts joined forces with the 4th Mansfield Woodhouse, 2nd Mansfield and 1st Rainworth groups for the "taster" event.

Marek Kulpec, Community link worker for Notts County Council, who was a Sea Scout in Poland, said: "This pilot evening has been a brilliant success.

"If one person had expressed an interest in joining it would have been a success, but over three quarters have asked to join the Scouts."

The event, at the headquarters of 2nd Mansfield Scouts, also included art and craft activities and team building games.

Darina, 11, originally from Poland, said, "I came with my mum and dad to show my older brother what Scouts is like.

"At the start of the night I didn't want to take part.

"But now we are both going to join the Scouts. It's great."
