Her mother Elaine said: "Somebody actually telephoned in after she sang it and they were crying their eyes out saying how beautiful it was."

It was Elaine who encouraged her to make the single, which is available to download on iTunes for 79p.

Alice decided that she wanted all the proceeds from the single to go to Help For Heroes. "I wanted to do something with it that's unselfish," she said.

The student, who dreams of a career in music, has always loved singing and playing the guitar but her parents were not so sure at first.

"My parents wouldn't let me have lessons," she says.

"They thought it was going to be a fad."

Help For Heroes co-founder and chief executive Bryn Parry said: "We would like to say a huge thank you to Alice for this lovely song.

"Help For Heroes is all about 'doing your bit' and Alice's contribution is a wonderful example of someone using their time to raise money and help us to provide direct, practical support to those who have suffered life-changing injuries and illnesses while serving our country."

He added: "I would like to say thank you to her for doing your bit and for every other fund- raising initiative that you inspire."

Alice's song Soldier first came about as a school project.

"I had to write an A-level music piece for composition and it had to be about a newspaper headline," she says.

"So I wrote this song called Soldier, literally just for my A-level, and it ended up being one of my favourite songs."

You can hear Alice performing on March 31 at the Golden Fleece pub in Mansfield Road, Nottingham, on March 23 on a Help the Heroes night at St Mary's Church, in Bottesford, and June 1 at the Acoustic Festival of Britain at Uttoxeter Racecourse, an event which also features well-known acts The Proclaimers, The Christians and The Hollies – more information at www.acousticfestival.co.uk/program.html
