Cameras installed to catch city motorists in bus and tram lanes
CAMERAS to deter motorists from driving in bus and tram lanes illegally have been installed in Nottingham.
The city council has set up Automatic Number Plate Recognition digital cameras at hotspots for cars and motorcyclists using bus or tram-only lanes.
The installation follows a successful period of testing and approval by the Department for Transport.
Motorists caught by the cameras will be sent a £60 penalty charge notice.

“We should have bus lanes all the way into Nottingham and the buses should be made to stay in them. if i am stuck in traffic and a bus comes to the end of the bus lane i will never allow them in to my lane.
I have got fed up with bus drivers who think they own the road and they have the right to pull out in front of you, are indicating to pull away from a bus stop while still picking up passengers and just stopping without indicating.
Years a go the standard of bus driving was very good but not now.”

“There was a time when a real journalist, working for a real newspaper, handed a piece of garbage propaganda like this from the authorities, would have done some investigation and written up stories about illegal bus lanes, bus lanes that didn't comply with the regulations, codes of practice, and other constraints on their use, and council's extorting and defrauding money out of the general public trying to go about their business despite all the roadblocks being put in their way by their supposed public "servants".
And to those complaining that motorists hold up buses: the only way to overcome the inherent problem suffered by all public transport (which isn't motorists, is to ban the public from using it. That way it won't have to stop every few hundred yards to pick them up (or, in the case of the "High Speed" Train, every few miles to keep the train lobby happy by calling at everyone's station to give everyone equal access to the supposed benefits of such high speed transport.”

“Sledge hammer and nut comes to mind. You hardly ever see a car in the part time bus lanes on Carlton road even when they are allowed when the restriction is not in force. I've never once seen a bus held up in a bus lane by a rogue car either.
The only infringement I've ever seen is people anticipating the end of the restriction and drifting into the bus lane a few yards before it finishes.
You can bet your life the cameras will be placed to maximise profits i.e. just before junctions/ turns and right at the end of the bus lane.
For once I agree with MB. Motor bikes and scooters should be allowed to use them. It will be much safer for everyone than bikes weaving between moving cars as they do now.”

“Mad Badger - ANPR will almost certainly take a picture of the front of the vehicle, so even if motorcycles are not allowed they can use the lanes unpunished.
It's the same with average speed cameras such as those on the M1.
Drivers should not be allowed to park in bus lanes. Going into town before the bus lane comes into operation (and after due to poor enforcement) buses end up using the main carriageway. So making things worse.
Parking also stops drivers who actually read signs from making best use of the lanes during non-operational times.”

“The possibility is supposedly being looked at, motorcycles travel much faster than cycles and do not impede buses in the same way, in my opinion they should be allowed to use them.”
