Mr Hopkins declined hospital treatment but his condition deteriorated during the day. He was taken to the QMC for emergency surgery for a head injury last night and is now in intensive care.
Police spent yesterday searching the shop for clues, and it was still cordoned off this morning as a police officer stood guard.
Motorists driving near the shop this morning were also stopped by officers hunting for witnesses. A police spokesman said: "This was a nasty attack and we need to find these people straight away."
The shop's till was found outside the Carberry Dental Practice in Ragdale Road, Bulwell, later in the morning.
Practice manager Betty Temple said she found it when she arrived at work. It contained loose change and a receipt, which showed the name of the newsagents'. "I am worried about him, I used to be a newsagent in Alfreton Road and we had many of those situations years ago," she said.
Police want anyone who was in Carey Road or Ragdale Road at the time of the incident, between 6am and 6.30am yesterday, to call Notts Police on 0115 844 4906.

“I am very suprised, geoff is a lovely guy and would not harm anyone? who ever did this i hope your very ashamed of yourselves, you have literally killed a mans hobby for money right? i went in the shop neally everyday hes very polite and always used to let me off if i was short of money, you must be feeling ashamed now? i would ask anyone who was around at the time it happened to give a statment as this is truely unfair. geoff get well soon we all hope you make a tremendous recovery :) x”

“The main concern of mine at the moment is i hope geoff recovers soon , after that i think vermin who are doing this should be removed from society for something a bit longer than the usual couple of years.. its either we bring back hanging or we do as the americans do it .. life means life ...p.s. why do we call it life imprisonment anyway,? when it is no such thing ? how can it be made so easy for these evil creatures to do this to good people ?”
