YOUNGSTERS in Alfreton will learn how to ride their bikes safely and maintain them.

Police community support officer Simon Childs and Councillor David Wilson will use a £1,200 Derbyshire County Council grant to run a new course.

It will last six to eight weeks and teach teenagers how to fix gears, change tyres and mend chains.

PCSO Childs said: "A cycling proficiency level two course will be run alongside this.

"The course will ensure that all attendees are proficient in riding on the roads.

"General advice will also be provided on how to stay safe when cycling. This will include what clothing and lighting to use when cycling at night.

"The funding will help to purchase items that will form a starter kit, including lights, a bell, a puncture repair kit and a water bottle.

"Darren Wilkinson, who is a local expert on cycle maintenance will be helping to run the course."

Mr Wilson said: "Many youngsters ride on cycles that are not roadworthy and this could put themselves and others at risk of injury."

To register to take part in the scheme, contact PCSO Childs at Alfreton Police Station on 101.
