A POLICEMAN based at Clifton Police Station for more than 34 years is among those to get the MBE.

PC Nigel Brown, 55, loves community policing so much that he came back out of retirement after being off for only one day.

His trademark bicycle and moustache have ensured that he has become a familiar face.

PC Brown said of the MBE: "I must admit it's a tremendous honour. It reflects on the team of police officers I've worked with over the years, and civilians, and the team I work with at the moment."

He also said he had received a lot of support from his wife of 34 years, Lesley, his son Ross, 26, and daughter Hannah, 23.

PC Brown began his police career in 1974 and has been based at Clifton Police Station since. In May, 1977, he was appointed as what was then known as a Community Constable – one of only four at the time. The Evening Post marked the occasion by gathering PC Brown and his colleagues outside the station for a picture. We then recreated the picture 30 years later.

As a beat manager he has responsibility for Silverdale and Wilford.

PC Brown, who lives in West Bridgford, retired after 30 years on December 31 2004, but came back to work under the force's '30 Plus' scheme.

"It would be a lovely honour to be able to work up to 2012 and help police the Olympics," he said. "It would be a lovely way to go out."

“Congratulation PC Brown MBE, this is what Policing is all about. I expect a lot of coppers would like to do something similar instead of filling out reams of paperwork probably in the name of "Human Rights". I hope you go on to a local council post after 2012. They need people like you.”

“Congratulations Barty. Recognition at last for having your feet under the same table for the last 35 years. Unlike the rest of us who were moved on as soon as we were familiar with the geography, criminals, characters, do's & don'ts.
    I imagine the day will be like any other gruelling 8-4 shift for 1697 Nigel Barton Brown MBE;
Cycle to work, take a shower.
Pinch a sausage from the 1st shift breakfast (hmm Steve Knight's? 'Must call in) Tea made by the newby; Darren (tell me again; where's your jubilee gong?) White.
Briefing & kit then out on the bike. Laura Chambers or Rivergreen for coffee and warm toast.
Brinkhill for a stranger danger talk. Must be PC. Don't let on that strangers can also be women. Don't mention Myra Hindley and risk the sack like Echo1.
Show the buttons at Varney Rd Shops. Blag some chips from the Farnbrough kids.
Show the buttons at Main Shops. Tea & cakes at Cornerstone.
School dinner at Blessed Robert. Those chairs don't get any bigger.
Afternoon tea with mother in the village.
    Back to CPS for 10/2.
Congratluations! 'Look forward to the celebrations and you buying a round. Ohh look! There goes a flying pig.”

“I have know Nigel since the 70s,before he became a policeman.I remember him becoming a policeman .
he in my opinion depicts what a policeman on the beat should be .He is the community policeman , he has a relationship with the people on his beat many he is on first name terms . They know young or old where and who to go to If they have a problem , whether it be a lost dog or cat ,a housewife who have locked themselves out of their house ,or seen a car been stolen or house broken into .he is the urban copper ,the bobby on the beat .The school children o all ages know and like him ,they know if they have problems Nigel always has a moment to listen and will sort it out if he can or give good advice .He i believe never took his promotional exams not because he was not good enough just he has always wanted to be the bobby on the beat , in close contact with his community.34 years he has looked after them and a bloody good job he has done.BRAVO NIGEL”

“Well done PC Brown on your MBE. I remember you when you used to visit Whitegate school over 30 years ago.”
