Neil Wood, NET general manager, said: “First and foremost we need to stress that our thoughts and sympathies are with the teenager’s family at this time.

“We have launched our own internal inquiry into the incident and of course are cooperating fully with the police crash investigation team and the rail accident investigation branch.”

The driver of the tram was also treated for shock last night.

A resident of nearby Nottingham Road, who did not want to be named, was out with his girlfriend walking his dog when the incident happened.

He said: "I crossed over and the girl was coming and I heard a massive bang.

"She was about 15 or 16 and she was with three others."

Tram services are running as normal again this morning.

Witnesses, or anyone with information that could help the police, is asked to call the Crash Investigation Team on 101 extension 800 2225.

“The last 2 posters, I agree with your comments entirely and I also wonder why these kids were on the tram tracks in the first place. I did hear on EMT that they weren't doing the 'chicken' thing which teenagers seem to get kicks from on level crossings.

I get so annoyed for Network Rail and NET sometimes. They can do all the publicity they want reminding people not the play about on tracks, they can say all of this while getting blue in the face and they still don't listen.

How old was this girl and her friends? 14? Well in my book a 14 years old know it's dangerous playing near tracks.”

“What an awful tragedy - my heart goes out to the family of the young lady....

One comment I would like to make though - there has been lots said about the crossing being 'dangerous' - there are signs there.... was Lindsey on her phone at the time of the accident and not concentrating on crossing the tracks? did she have an Ipod with earphones in? - did she not hear or see the tram - ??

the reason I say this is on East Midlands Today (last night) when the reporters were speaking to Lindsey's Mom and her friend, they both had phones in their hands - and we all see young people with phones glued to their ears - while walking round.....

Although an horrendous tragic accident - people have to look out for their own safety, and avoid distractions.... there is not always mitigating circumstances....”

“Somebody losing their life at such a young age is a terrible tragedy and my condolences go to her family and friends. Also my thoughts are with the tram driver who will probably never have a peaceful nights sleep again for the rest of his life.

There is no doubt about it that something needs to be done at this crossing, whether it is more lighting or building a foot bridge over it.

However, questions need to be asked as to why these kids were hanging around the crossing in the first place. I grew up in Hucknall and used to live right near a railway crossing. My parents always told me, in no uncertain terms, that me and my brother were to stay away from there at all times.

The youngsters of today need better educating on things like this. Sadly, it is only when tragedies like this happen that people start to take notice.”

“A month ago I was taking phographs of on-coming trams with a new camera. I wanted to try some of the fancy features. I was standing very close to the track at a station and was tempted to just stand on the track while no trams were coming from behind me. Instead I just took the picture from where I was.. at that moment a tram passed me from behind and just finely brushed my arm. I was so lucky not to have made that step onto the track, because, being electric, the tram could not be heard from behind me and I would probably not be alive now to tell the tale. The incident has taught me a serious lesson. The tramway is a very dangerous place by day or by night. Extra care & attention is needed when close to the tracks.”

“What an utterly shameful post from ShmuleShekels made without knowledge of the facts and prior to any investigation. The Post really should consider whether it is willing to allow comments of such a nature to be placed on its web site.”
