Neil Wood, NET general manager, said: “First and foremost we need to stress that our thoughts and sympathies are with the teenager’s family at this time.

“We have launched our own internal inquiry into the incident and of course are cooperating fully with the police crash investigation team and the rail accident investigation branch.”

The driver of the tram was also treated for shock last night.

A resident of nearby Nottingham Road, who did not want to be named, was out with his girlfriend walking his dog when the incident happened.

He said: "I crossed over and the girl was coming and I heard a massive bang.

"She was about 15 or 16 and she was with three others."

Tram services are running as normal again this morning.

Witnesses, or anyone with information that could help the police, is asked to call the Crash Investigation Team on 101 extension 800 2225.

“While i have every sympathy with the family on this tragic loss, but did none of the four girls see or hear the tram????? i am not looking for blame but it does seem odd that they were all holding hands crossing but oblivious to the tram? I dont agree with the site being shut, as it has not shown to be a fault of NET.”

    “@HarpersDerby

I agree with you 100% Why on earth were these kids hanging around the railway and tramway in the first place??

I also saw the report on EMT and It made me so angry, people trying to put blame on NET and the Robin Hood line when these people should of been anywyere near the track in the first place, unless they were waiting to cross them for what ever reason, and if this was the case, maybe she did have the music too loud or what ever. If this is the case maybe she should of turned it off for 5 seconds while crossing the tracks then maybe she might of heard the tram coming”

“What an awful tragedy - my heart goes out to the family of the young lady....

One comment I would like to make though - there has been lots said about the crossing being 'dangerous' - there are signs there.... was Lindsey on her phone at the time of the accident and not concentrating on crossing the tracks? did she have an Ipod with earphones in? - did she not hear or see the tram - ??

the reason I say this is on East Midlands Today (last night) when the reporters were speaking to Lindsey's Mom and her friend, they both had phones in their hands - and we all see young people with phones glued to their ears - while walking round.....

Although an horrendous tragic accident - people have to look out for their own safety, and avoid distractions.... there is not always mitigating circumstances....”
